Stephen Olford’s Teaching Ministry
The Stephen Olford Institute for Biblical Preaching
Dr. Olford founded the Stephen Olford Institute for Biblical Preaching in 1980 to promote biblical preaching and practical training for pastors, evangelists and lay leaders because he believed strongly in the importance of a verse-by-verse explanation of Scripture. Dr. Olford had already been involved in an extensive teaching, preaching, and writing ministry to help preachers. In 1988 the Stephen Olford Center for Biblical Preaching in southeast Memphis was dedicated to this end.
The institute served as headquarters for Olford Ministries International. Thousands of pastors and Christian leaders have attended training sessions at the center.
The Stephen Olford Center for Biblical Preaching will continue to be a ministry center in Memphis, Tennessee, but now as a vital part of Union University. On April 3, 2007, the Board of Directors of Olford Ministries International, Inc (OMI) voted unanimously for the merger and partnership. The OMI organization will continue to operate and minister under the umbrella of Union University with a new joint ministry vision. Union has graciously expressed a desire to honor and perpetuate the legacy of Dr. Stephen Olford. The President of Union University, Dr. David Dockery, established a Chair of Expository Preaching in Stephen Olford’s name. Dr. David Olford teaches in that Chair and is helping establish a Doctor of Ministries program in Expository Preaching.

“Throughout his ministry as a pastor, evangelist, and teacher, Dr. Stephen Olford powerfully illustrated a simple truth: Effective evangelism, church growth and discipleship is built upon the practice of expounding the Word of God. At [NOBTS] we are working every day to raise up a new generation of pastors and evangelists who will pick up his torch and carry forward the passion for biblical exposition that was his life’s work. There will never be another Stephen Olford, but may God give us a great army of preachers who will be like him.” – Chuck Kelley, President of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
The Stephen Olford Ministry Legacy Project is the new phase of his ministry.
The Stephen Olford Ministry Legacy Project is the new phase of his ministry. It extends Dr. Olford’s life work on an international level. While not as extensive as the formal training available at The Stephen Olford Center at Union University, the SOML project provides instruction in biblical preaching and practical training for pastors, evangelists, and lay leaders in foreign countries and continuing education modules for pastors, missionaries, and teachers already in the field.
